What's new

Backup: Agentless backup for Proxmox Virtual Environment (VE)

Agentless backup and recovery for workloads in Proxmox VE is now available.

Key benefits

  • Reliable: The agentless backup solution is built by leveraging more than 20 years of Acronis' experience in data protection.
  • Flexible: You can backup virtual machines and containers to local storage, Acronis Cloud, or public cloud storage.
  • Universal: The solution supports migration of workloads to and from Proxmox VE.

Implementation notes

  • Proxmox VE support is provided in a special plug-in/add-on, installed along with the standard Agent for Linux.
  • To support automatic protection of virtual machines after their migration across Proxmox VE cluster nodes, each node must have the Agent for Proxmox (Agent for Linux + plugin) installed.
  • The solution supports most types of virtual machines and container backend storage.
    • For virtual machines backups, there are no limitations, and all virtual machine backend storages are supported.
    • For containers backups, the container backend storage must support snapshots.

Supported scenarios

  • Backup and restore Windows/Linux Proxmox VE virtual machines and containers, running on Proxmox VE 8.2+
  • File-level recovery
  • Cross-platform recoveries to/from Proxmox VE virtual machines

Licensing

Standard licensing: A Virtual Machine quota is required per Proxmox VE virtual machine or container.

Advanced Security + XDR: Potentially unwanted application protection

Potentially unwanted application protection protects against software that can slow down your system, display intrusive advertising, and track the system's internet usage to sell information to advertisers.

Feature highlights

  • The feature is enabled automatically for existing Advanced Security + EDR / XDR workloads, so that there is seamless protection against unwanted software applications.
  • Detections are integrated into EDR incidents.

Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud

Backup

  • [ABR-402780] Executing a protection plan via "Run now" button may produce incremental backups instead of full ones, if the plan was created selecting "Always full" scheduling schema, while there was "simple UI" mode enabled in the web console interface.

Common

  • [ABR-227164] False critical alerts are generated while backups are waiting in queue.
  • [ABR-404462] Protected workloads appear to be offline in the Cyber Protection Cloud console.
  • [ABR-405067] Unable to edit protection plans for MS SQL databases.

Cyber Protection agent

  • [ABR-395095] Protection plans get revoked or stopped and the following error appears in logs: "Failed to fix stages."
  • [ABR-403746] Configuring retention rules on existing backup plans might cause the backup plans to fail with the error "POR: Element 'Commands' cannot be found." if the number of slices to delete on the next run is too large.
  • [ADP-42608] Plans with the 'Data protection map' option enabled might fail with the error "An internal error has occurred. Please contact the Support team."
  • [PLTFRM-73349] Backups fail occasionally with the error "Failed to connect to the Agent Core service on this machine." The error details contain a message about operation timeout with 0 bytes received.
  • [PLTFRM-78833] The error "Failed to connect to localhost port 80 after 0 ms: Could not connect to server" appears after updating the protection agent on Linux virtual machines.
  • [PLTFRM-79334] Increased CPU usage after the update to agent version 25.05.x.

Virtualization protection

  • [ABR-405453] Unable to create a plan for conversion to virtual machine.

Known issues and limitations

Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud

Autodiscovery and remote installation

  • [ADP-39185] Active Directory-based discovery does not operate as exepcted with the default configuration of Windows Server 2025 because it enforces LDAP encryption by default.

Backup

  • [ABR-365442] The backup validation completes successfully, but the validation status is incorrect or missing in backup sets with a large number of backups.
  • [ABR-361097] It is possible to create backups with special characters in their names, but such backups are not accessible when saved on a network storage.
    • Solution: Do not use special characters in backup names, even though the application allows you to.
  • [ABR-305920] The backups of System state performed via the Windows Server Backup feature fail with the error message "The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process."

Bootable media

  • [ABR-358235] WinPE-based media: Unable to browse backup files if the cloud storage location contains corrupted backup archives.

Cyber Protection agent

  • [ABR-371912] The Acronis SnapAPI module may require separate compilation after installation on Rocky Linux or Oracle Linux 8.7 distributions.
    • Solution: Compile the SnapAPI module manually after installing the Agent for Linux on a workload that runs on a Rocky Linux or Oracle Linux 8.7 distribution.

Recovery

  • [ABR-371521] When browsing backup archives, the sorting of files by last change date does not work correctly.

Virtualization protection

  • [ABR-383978] No alert about almost reached storage quota is displayed for agentless Microsoft Azure VM backups.
  • [ABR-383972] No alert about exceeded storage quota is displayed for agentless Microsoft Azure VM backups.
